Nigeria is NOT and has NEVER been a secular nation- not under christian british invaders, not under the military rule and definitely not under democracy.
I dont like hypocrites!
Claiming to be secular does not make it true just like claiming to be prophet of God or Nelson Mandela does not make you either of them- One's Wishful thinking is clearly different from reality.
Secularity deals with separation of Church/mosque from government and this separation should also reflect in the lives of those in the nation without the government intervening and claiming their activities to be 'religiously' wrong.
- Under the British invaders; they used religion as a key tool to brainwash those they occupy- giving them a higher power to look up to while they continue to brutally occupy,enslave and kill them- They taught religion and brainwashed as much as possible into submission- such was the prize paid by our forefathers in the West quest for power, wealth and dominance over the black race.
The 'Christian British invaders' never separated Church from government- it was their secret weapon against those they occupied and this tactics lasted as long as their brutal colonization world wide.
- Under the military rule; the military rulers understood very well the complexity of religion and how dear Nigerians have suddenly adopted to it; so they used it together with tribe as a tool gain popular mandate from the people. They traded carefully on what laws to present and they kept 'some' religious leaders close to them in other to help further their goals.
- Under democracy we continue to witness how religion has become the favorite tool of politicians to divide and conquer people. Secularity means separation of church/mosque from government yet the Nigerian government(s) both on Federal and state level have continually sponsored religious pilgrims abroad.
When our politicians debate on parliamentary floor about persecuting gays,lesbians in Nigeria- they do not do so by bringing forward any scientific reasons why gays should be sentenced to years in prison instead they(both our Muslim and Christian legis-looters) say: "Our 'religion' does NOT accept gay or lesbian'. Or Our 'culture' does not accept it. Yet again putting forward religion while claiming to be secular? How logical is that?
When debating about age of marriage for girls- religion is again put forward yet we shamelessly continue to claim to be 'a secular' nation as if there is anything special about secularity.
You can be secular all you want but stop lying not when you need religion to enslave people.
Secular nation is a nation completely separate from religion and 'most' Nigerians cannot deal without their so called religions even though many of us are 'religiously hypocritical' and not really religious in true sense- we simply use religion as a cover when we choose to display our bigotry.
